Garage door opener not working

It's one of three things: the remote, the power, or the opener itself. If the wall button works and the remote doesn't, it's the remote. If neither works, check the breaker and the plug. If the motor runs but the door stays put, the drive gear has stripped.

Call (510) 694-8090

Same-day, and the phone is answered any hour. Repairs from $150. A new opener supplied and fitted from $460. We check the gear and the board before we ever talk about replacing the unit.

What causes it

Remote battery or lost pairing

The most common and the cheapest. Wall button works, remote doesn't.

Fix: New battery, then reprogram. Minutes, not hours.

Stripped drive gear

Motor runs, nothing moves, often with a grinding sound from the head unit.

Fix: Gear kit replacement.

Failed logic board

No response from anything, no lights. Damp coastal air is hard on boards.

Fix: Board replacement, or a new opener if the gearbox has gone too.

Tripped breaker or unplugged unit

Worth checking before anything else.

Fix: Reset the breaker, check the outlet.

Safety sensors blocking

The opener will run to open but refuse to close.

Fix: Align and clean the photo eyes.

Before you call

Worth trying

  • Try the wall button as well as the remote
  • Change the remote battery
  • Check the breaker
  • Look for a steady light on both sensors

Leave alone

  • Replace the whole opener before the gear has been checked
  • Bypass the safety sensors
