Garage door cable and roller repair in Alameda

Cables carry the door's weight between the springs and the bottom brackets. Rollers guide it through the track. Both wear quietly, and both do expensive damage once they let go.

Frayed or snapped cables

A cable that has started to fray looks like a wire brush where it winds onto the drum. Once one side snaps the door hangs crooked and can jam hard against the track and bend it. Cables get replaced in pairs for the same reason springs do. They've done the same work.

Worn rollers

Grinding and scraping is nearly always rollers. Steel rollers with exposed bearings are the ones that go, and damp salt air gets into those bearings faster than it does a few miles inland. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quieter and last longer, and a full set is one of the cheapest upgrades on the door.

Why this matters on a shoreline garage

Salt in the air works on bearings and on cable strands. Around Bay Farm, the Alameda shoreline and the Emeryville and Albany waterfronts, hardware has a harder life than the same hardware three miles inland. Galvanized parts are worth asking for here.

Questions we get asked

How much does it cost?
Cables from $165 a pair. A full nylon roller set from $145 installed.
Can I run the door with one cable snapped?
No. The door is unbalanced and it will jam or drop. Leave it down and call.
Are nylon rollers worth it?
On a door you use every day, yes. They're quieter, and the sealed bearings hold up in damp air far better than open steel.
